Education
Education
On the education aspect, Buganda Community Action Network (BCANET) focuses on the enhancement of skills that can enable students to become self-empowered through skilled labour and thereby generate future employment opportunities for themselves.
There is need to facilitate teachers with modern teaching techniques and material to enable them deliver quality and relevant education to the future generation.
Schools need to be supported with scholastic material to supplement what they have and plug the limitations currently faced due to meagre incomes of parents who send children to school.
A conducive environment is crucial for education and therefore infrastructure in which students undertake learning is vital to enable learning to continue regardless of the weather elements and with safety of the structures used.
Below are some of the services to be spearheaded under education.
Sports
Extracurricular activities such as sports are vital for a child’s development. Sports provides a platform for children to interact, socialise and develop people skills.
Sports also enables children to stay fit and healthy. Moreso for some children, this may be the stepping stone to a future career in one of the sports disciplines. It’s therefore important that sports should be promoted.
Technical Skills Support
Many children are offered an educational path that focuses on primary, secondary and then university. If they fail to progress along this educational path, they are left by the way-side and start carrying out casual jobs or working as labourers or farm workers.
For those who make it to university, they face the challenge of finding a job after graduation and struggle to find employment.
BCANET seeks to support pupils and students to acquire technical skills such as carpentry, metal work, so that when leave school, they can have career options and can utilise their technical skills to become self-employed and earn a living.
Teacher Support & Training
Without the teacher, the child cannot learn. The teacher acts as the fountain of knowledge for each child and supports the child as he or she progresses in the education sphere. Yet often there isn’t sufficient attention given to the skills the teacher needs to impart the necessary knowledge to the pupils.
Teachers need to be provided with support and training so that they can expand their knowledge, adapt new teaching techniques and address the various challenges they face in educating children.
By supporting teachers with adequate teaching material and availing training opportunities for them, the quality of education they deliver will also be enhanced.
Basic Scholastic Material
A child’s education takes place when the child hears what he or she is being taught, reads books, takes notes and carries out exercises assigned by the teacher to facilitate assessment of the progress made in absorbing the knowledge being passed across.
Many children in rural schools miss out on this whole process due to the shortage of scholastic material such as reading books, notebooks that they can use to take notes and pens that they can use to write notes. Later on in life despite having had elementary education, they end up struggling to read and write.
By availing the basic scholastic material, the learning process will be enhanced enabling the pupils to have the basic and fundamental skills in life, the ability to read and write.
Primary School Infrastructure
The learning environment is key to a child’s education. It needs to be safe and well facilitated. Unfortunately, many children endure studying in deplorable conditions in unsafe structures.
In addition to that, when the weather changes such as during the rainy seasons, teaching cannot take place as the buildings do not provide adequate shelter. When the weather is bitterly cold, children are exposed to this weather and cannot adequately focus on their studies.
The pursuit of education should not be a hazard and it’s vital that adequate infrastructure is in place to enable pupils to study at all times regardless of the weather, to be protected from the elements and to also feel secure.
